Brand-new: City installs new LED streetlight fittings in Durbanville

The City’s Energy Directorate is installing brand new Light-Emitting Diode (LED) streetlight fittings in Durbanville as part of its LED retrofitting programme. The City’s Acting Mayoral Committee Member for Energy, Councillor Siseko Mbandezi, and officials visited Durbanville to have a closer look at the work. This month, the City upgraded older streetlight bulbs with the newer LEDs in the area.
‘With this programme, we are installing newer, brighter energy efficient fittings to streetlights in areas across the city.
‘We have been installing the newer LEDs to streetlights in many areas over recent months and years and we will be reaching more areas in future. Teams are making steady progress, making communities brighter and safer while being energy efficient at the same time.
‘The LEDs are much easier to maintain and are less likely to be vandalised due to its construction. Where LED streetlights are faulty, our teams urgently attend to them as soon as they can. We are also urging residents to report faulty streetlights to us by contacting our Call Centre so that we keep the lights on.
‘The City has two long-term programmes, which focusses on reducing the City's carbon footprint by replacing older luminaires with newer LEDs. Currently we are prioritising major routes and ageing infrastructure in the city. From 2026, our 25-year plan will commence, which will focus on replacing older luminaires with LEDs on minor routes in residential areas.
‘In general, LED streetlights offer significant advantages over the older lighting options in terms of energy efficiency, life span, light quality, and environmental impact. This is an example of the City’s investment into critical infrastructure and to improving lighting in communities across the city. The City thanks the project teams for their work and the community for their support,’ said Councillor Mbandezi.
Benefits of LED lighting:
• Efficient infrastructure in the community – LEDs are more energy-efficient than traditional lighting. LEDs also do not contain harmful materials.
• Light quality and lifespan - LEDs provide brighter, more focused light, which improves visibility and potentially enhancing safety on our roads. LEDs also last much longer, which means fewer replacements and lower maintenance costs for the City.
